How to create a Gmail App Password
The app reads your GeM OTP emails from your own Gmail, so it can type the OTP for you. It needs an App Password: a separate 16-letter password just for this app.
Before you start
Your Google account needs 2-Step Verification switched on. App Passwords are only available after that. Using a Google Workspace (office) account? Your administrator may have switched App Passwords off.
Steps
- Open your Google Account security page. Go to myaccount.google.com/security and sign in.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification (if it is not already on) and finish the phone verification.
- Open App Passwords: myaccount.google.com/apppasswords. If you do not see it, search for "App passwords" in the search box at the top of your Google Account page.
- Create one. Type a name such as "GeM app" and press Create. Google shows a 16-letter password in a yellow box. Copy it now: Google shows it only once.
- Open our app and find the Mail (OTP) box in the right panel. Enter your Gmail address and paste the 16-letter password (spaces do not matter). Press Connect.
- Done. The status turns to Connected. When GeM sends an OTP, the app reads it and fills it in for you.
Good to know
The app only reads new emails. It never deletes, moves or sends anything. Your App Password stays on your computer, encrypted by Windows, and is never sent to our server.
To stop the app reading your mail, press Remove mail in the app, and delete the App Password on the same Google page.
Other email providers: Yahoo works the same way with an App Password. For a business email (for example from your own website), type its IMAP server name in the app. Outlook.com personal accounts do not allow this method.
